THE WILDEBEEST PENDANTS

BRONZE skull pendants; MADE with LOST-WAX TECHNIQUE.

For this assignment in ARTDES307: Multiples & Mechanism’s, our instructor Ruth Koelwyn tasked us to create 10 pendants through casting. Every pendant had to start from a master mold which was created through vulcanized rubber, and had to be slightly different from one another. My idea was to make each pendant slightly different by replicating the age and decay process of natural skulls.

Began with an initial cast of my master pendant.

Placed the pendant in vulcanized rubber.

Injected the vulcanized rubber mold with wax 9 times.

Modified each mold to be slightly different with flame and bur carving.

Invested together and casted.

Sanded to microfine and polished with magnetic tumbler.

Where it all started - a block of wax.

Vulcanized rubber mold; the hole is where the wax is injected.

Initial skull design; you can see where I made my changes before finalizing - raising the horns, and sharpening up the shape of the face by adding cheekbones.

Master skull finished and polished - prior to vulcanizing.
